Black & Yellow - Bumble Bee or Just Plain Cool?

Yesterday I told you about the black bookcase I was thinking of adding a pop of colour to.  Today I started thinking that maybe yellow would be really fun and it would work well with our decor. According to my daughter that is a very bad decision and will look like a bumble bee.  So naturally I took to the web and did a little research of my own.

If Kelly Wearstler thinks it's cool shouldn't that be enough?

No bumble bees here!

Can't say I could live with this much yellow but I do admire the tenacity of the homeowner to pull off something so bold.

Again, I feel vindicated to be in the good company of another brilliant designer, Jenna Lyons and her fabulous nursery.

This room is actually pulling off more than one shade of yellow and in VERY close proximity to each other.  Well done!

Maybe it's the chevron but I'm loving this outdoor scene.

Soooo, what do you think?  Bumble bee or uber chic?

  1. I love it! Looking like a bumblebee is not that bad, is it? You couldn't pick a more uplifting colour than bright yellow! Pics please!

  2. Uber chic! You're going to have to give your daughter some design lessons. :)

  3. I think in small doses it's fun and chic, absolutely. And wow--that mirror in that all yellow room! I've never seen anything like that!!

  4. Uber-chic for sure :-) I think black goes with any colour, and it works well with yellow. Just don't paint black & yellow stripes on your walls - THAT could end up looking like a bumble bee! ;-)

  5. Adding a second neutral, like a warm grey, helps to subdue the colour palette and prevent that bumble-bee effect.
If you love the look, you'll make it work! Good luck!

  7. Why not add a chevron or striped effect to the back in yellow? I think it would look fabulous! It all depends on what yellow you end up using. Using a more muted shade would make it look chic - don't you think?

  8. I think this falls in the category of can-be-bad-if-you're-not-a-talented-designer. So, I'm confident you can totally pull it off in an uber chic way.

  10. I think black and yellow together is stunning. Though when I wear an outfit sporting the two colours I tend to get panicky that I might be projecting - bee. Love the yellow walls with the glossy black mirror. Gorgeous images!

  12. I say uber chic! I do love your daughter's comment, though! That was cute. :) I love the images you found, and I really love this combination. I say, go for it!

  13. I LOVE yellow so I also vote for uber chic - and it's just paint, right? You can paint over it in a year if you don't like it anymore. Go for it!

  14. I can't believe I forgot but we did black and yellow for our wedding - so another reason I love the combo :)

  16. haha about the bumblebee! And even if it does, bumblebees are gorgeous anyway, so what's the problem?

Lovely combination - an absolute favourite.

  18. Black & Yellow stripe = Bumble bee...just black & yellow = FABULOSITY. And that is pretty much the only math I know, HA! (c: And I'm pretty sure you could've just convinced me with "Kelly Wearstler likes it". BAM.

  19. Totally - yellow is stunning and a hint of black is always so grounding especially a glossy paint on the door. Love Domino, really miss that mag!

  20. I say just plain cool :). Love all the images...

  21. All of these images do the combo beautifully, so I guess no danger of bumblebee! I think to play it safe I'd go in the direciton of a mustard yellow for some sophistication.
