Post Alley - Seattle

Last weekend we took a little road trip down to Seattle.  Sadly the weather in Seattle was no improvement over our wet and gray summer here but it was still nice to take a trip.

While wandering around Pike Market area we stumbled across Post Alley.  I was initially intrigued by the cool Art Deco sign.

After photographing it we noticed that there were people headed towards the alley so we thought we'd follow them and find out what was going on (what could possibly be wrong with heading down a dark alley???)

As I got closer I saw people photographing a wall.  It looked colourful and I'm a huge sucker for installation art so I was definitely game for whatever it was.  See if you can guess...

How about a closer look?

I had to be this close before I realized it was gum.  Yup, chewed up gum of every colour under the rainbow stuck to the wall.  There was also a gumball machine right there so you could join in the fun.

These two weren't in the least bit interested in joining in the gooey fun.

The boy couldn't chew fast enough and all I got was his hand sticking the gum to the wall.

What do you think...gross or cool?

  1. I find it grossly cool. While part of me thinks it is defacing a building, part of me thinks Why Not create something that sparks conversation. I am iffy on this one. Thanks for showing us though.

  2. Cool? I think? It would be less gross if the stringy ones hanging down from the window weren't there.

Definitely interesting! Makes you wonder how long it took to go from gross and annoying when there were just a few pieces of gum to a cool installation now that there are thousands.

I am relieved to find out you haven't been furiously chewing gum for some crazy DIY idea. :)

  3. I think it's cool! I guess that's one way to go with something that was probably really annoying at first. Thanks for sharing! You took some great photos :)

  4. Eeeeew. I'm going to have to say gross. I'm pretty sure I couldn't have stayed in that alley for too long, but then I have an issue with public restrooms, too. Great photos, though!

  5. You were in my city last weekend! I know, the weather has been less than desirable. I came back from Maui and it's still like Fall weather this week! Yikes, when on earth are we going to get summer? Visitors love to see that wall. Gross, but everyone always wants to add to it!

  6. Hmmm, grossssss! It looked very intriguing at first, but then yuk. It is definitely unique, but I still think its pretty gross. Hope you had a great time in Seattle.

  8. Kind of cool, kind of gross, but definitely interesting. My kids would have thought it was amazing when they were a bit younger. I'm sure this will be a favorite family story for yours.

  10. Can something be gross and cool at the same time? I guess that would make it "grool".

  11. The germ freak in me says gross, but what a concept...

  12. Most definitely both cool and gross!! A photo of this wall would be terrific matted, framed and hung on a gallery wall for that fun pop of colour(s) :-)

  14. I'd heard about a gum wall but forgot where it was! I guess it's kind of gross but kind of cool at the same time. If it keeps it off the sidewalk, it's a great idea :)

  15. Gross AND cool :-) Great colours and texture, but just think of all the spit residue! Definitely the most unique artwork I've ever seen :-)

  16. There is a wall like this where I grew up in San Luis Obispo, California called Gum Alley. Now I live in the Seattle area. I'm wondering what that says about my choices in living environments??

  17. Hmmm, I'd have to say that is kinda gross ........ although it does look cool. The thing that goes through my mind is, will they ever stop? The next time we go down to Seattle, we'll check it out. BTW, see you Tuesday.

  18. I say cool from far away and gross up close! I love the retro sign though - that's really cool. I've always wanted to go to Seattle.

  19. It seems the line between gross and cool is as fine as the line between ugly and beautiful. Cool, but please don't make me touch it!
