I sort of alluded to this last week but now it's official. We're moving...again! This time we're headed to the interior of British Columbia aka wine country but more about that later. I am so excited to get to work on a new home and can't stop thinking of paint colours, fabrics and furniture layouts.
There's no doubt in my mind that grey paint will replace all the taupe neutrals I have been using for so long. Grey has undertones of either green, blue or purple and I am strictly on the lookout for a grey with blue undertones but one that is perceived as only grey.
Here are my top contenders.
1. Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore. Light and soft with a slight cast of blue and it looks great with bold colour which is exactly what I'm looking for.
Jenna Lyons
3. Stone Harbor by Benjamin Moore. Super light and easy to live with.
4. Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore. Super light (almost white) and neutral.
5. Stonington Gray by Benjamin Moore. Another perfect backdrop.
So what do you think? Have you used a grey that you are smitten with because I want to hear all your suggestions and recommendations before taking the giant leap. I happen to really like Benjamin Moore but I should say that I am not against other paint manufacturers so feel free to share whatever great grey experience you have had.

Loving all of these! Especially the first image! Gorg!

I also love greys, I love the greys with the blue undertones…
ReplyDeleteFunny, I just did a post about how we're all moving away from taupes and beige and towards greys...Apparently the secret to using grey is to make sure you've got lots of colours in the room! (But you probably already knew that, as you can see it in these pics!).
ReplyDeleteWe just painted our son's room in Stonington Grey and love it!
Carol, congrats to you and your family! That is so excited and of course I'm even more excited to see all of the new work and design you plan to do in your new home. This post really makes me want to learn more about color. I love that third image of the living area - it's so pretty. We used Feather Grey by BM in our bathroom but it's too blue I believe for what you're looking for. I think I'm leaning toward the Stonington Grey based on these images. Do you follow Abby at A Delightful Design? She just did her living room and hallway in a Martha Stewart color that you might be interested in. I can e-mail you the link to her post.
ReplyDeleteThese are all amazing grays! Thanks for the new color inspirations. That's exciting that you'll be moving towards wine country! I bet it will be a beautiful place to live. :) I'm excited to see what colors you come up with. I love the images you showed for coventry gray. I also like Ben. Moore's Alaskan Husky! The colors above it and after it on the color swatch are also nice. It does have a small hint of blue.
ReplyDeleteSuch exciting news! I always love planning out new spaces!
ReplyDeleteI am smitten with grey and wish I could paint in this apartment - the walls would be grey for sure! :)
Ooo, a move! Fun and icky all at the same time! I have no advice on grey...other than I like it. :P
ReplyDeleteI love all these colors. I also think BM's Gentlemen's Gray is a good color too.
ReplyDeleteI recommend Sarah Richardson's Para Paint Shoreline. I painted our living room that and love it. It isn't too dark and it is quite cozy.
ReplyDeleteCarol,
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to be able to decorate a new home! We're planning on moving to BC's interior as well, but it won't be for a couple more years.
I'm drawn to a shade of gray like Gray Owl. Even though it has subtle blue undertones, it's warm, inviting and a great neutral.
Loving your ideas....You have such a great eye for paint colors!!!! I am still loving the one you suggested for my laundry room.
ReplyDeleteThe classic gray is my favorite but they're all beautiful. I love the BM colors with Lowes Valspar paint. In my experience it's the very best paint there is. Excited about your move and the new place, can't wait to see what you end up with!
ReplyDeletehow fun and exciting. a new home! I bet you are going to have so much fun decorating! Can't wait to follow along :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the move, you must be so excited. Can't wait to see how you decorate your new place.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the move! I have grey owl on my main floor and I love it!! It's been on the walls for 6 years and I have never grown tired of it. I also love Stonington grey.
ReplyDeleteAndrea
I look forward to more news on a move in future posts.
ReplyDeleteThis post is SO timely. I am FINALLY redoing the bedroom and grey is my main colour. I found all the bedding I need and now need to get paint chips. At first glance I think the Grey Owl is the way to go but will know better once I get the chip. The accent color is a pale red (in the blue tones) which will be the colour of the wall behind the bed.
congrats on the move, keep us posted:-) One comment about Coventry Gray, which we have in our bedroom along with Kingsport Gray - it has a touch of blue undertone - but I do love it:-) I might go with Classic Gray for our kitchen/great room.
ReplyDeleteOh gray paint--the color continues to elude me. I want just plain old gray gray and it seems I always end up with green-gray and purple-gray. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteGood luck getting ready for your move!!
Love Stonington Grey. It reads blue in low light but gorgeous even in bright light. Hey when you come over, my daughter and son's room are painted Stonington Grey. I also LOVE grey owl. I am sad my thrifting buddy is moving. I guess I have someone to hit a few wineries along the Naramata Bench with!
ReplyDeleteI'm so disappointed that you're moving!!!!!! I'm jealous too, 'cause I love the Okanagan. I wish you all the luck in the world with the move!!! Love the Stonington Grey.
ReplyDeleteOh congrats Carol! Its so exciting to start over in a new home, wine country?!?! NIIICE! I love grey, I personally pefer the "greige" tones, a little bit warmer, earthy I guess?...I'm feeling
ReplyDeletethe Coventry Gray by Benjamin Moore but not sure if my screen is deceiving me right now.
Grey walls definitely make for a beautiful room! I'm sure whatever you choose will be perfect!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new Move. I hope it's a move that will be exciting for you. Can't wait to hear the details.
ReplyDeleteI have "Gentle rain" by Behr in our bedroom. It reads slightly purple and I have since put Dolphin Fin by Behr in our living room and it reads a slight green undertone, but is a true grey if you are looking for one. After all you know that it depends on your new space and the natural light that goes in. Good luck with the move.
Carol! How fun to be able to work on a new house! Congratulations! Will you be able to get in there and paint before the furniture goes in?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite grey is the Ben Moore Classic Grey. Love that it's almost white looking. Pinning that one.
Camille
Congratulations on your move. So exciting!
ReplyDeleteBtw I love all those grays. I'll be referring back to this post next time I need to paint a room.
congats! I have loved living with classic grey & grey owl! stonington is a bit cooler but also nice!
ReplyDeleteI love gray! We've used Valspar's Tornado Watch and Colonial Gray.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the move! Can't wait to see your new home. I'm crushing on grey right now, too. I've been looking for just the perfect grey for our bedroom. I bought some new bedding and stuffed it in the linen closet. The hubs doesn't know it, but there may be a room makeover in our future. ;-) Great pics! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love all of these images! I wish I had this help 3 months ago when we repainted our home. I chose a 'grey' that turned out lavender on the walls! I had to have the team redo it in a new color. Please let us know what you end up choosing - I'll need a 'perfect grey' to remember for the next house project! Cheers! Ana
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, congrats on the move!! Wine country is one of my favourite places in BC, it's so beautiful out there!
ReplyDeleteI tested Stonington Grey for the nursery and it was definitely the truest grey of the lot if anything it has a cooler, more blue undertone but mostly looked grey. Great colour. Can't wait to see and hear all about your moving adventures!
Carol,
ReplyDeleteI've used Grey Owl throughout our home: the stairwell, upstairs hallway, exercise room, 4th bedroom, and downstairs den. All these rooms receive very different natural light and the one thing I've noticed is the color remains consistent from space to space despite the different lighting or lack thereof. I like just about all shades of gray, but Grey Owl is a fav of mine.
Just sharing!

Carol,
ReplyDeleteI found your page through Cassie today and just finished painting my family room, kitchen and entryway Gray Owl. I tried most of those colors and found Gray Owl was the most gray out of them all. Coventry came out to purple on my poster board. I'm going to go dig around some on your blog, glad I found you!
I just found your blog while looking for a companion colour to the Coventry Gray that I painted my dining room about two years ago. Last fall I painted my office Coventry Gray as well and am finally putting the room together! White office furniture and a great gray and white striped rug that I picked up last week at Crate and Barrel. Still mulling over the accent colour! When I'm designing for others I have no problem, when it's for me I take forever!
ReplyDeleteMy search for a darker gray for the living room continues... now off to read your blog in more detail!
oh i love this post! i love the owl gray too. my fave gray so far is Dove Wing by Ben. its just a hint and has no yellow or blue to it.
ReplyDeleteGrey colored ceiling are amazing to watch. It beautifies the interior part of house and i love this blog!!Burnaby Cleaning Service
ReplyDeleteWe just painted our living room and hallway/stairwell in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. It's perfection! It's very light but it's distinctly GRAY which is what we were going for. Love all of these too though. Isn't Jenna Lyons' house to die for? Good luck!
