Be an Organized Shopper

There's so much talk of organizing our homes lately but what about your shopping?  I tend to write a list for groceries but nothing else.  This means there's been more than one time when I saw the perfect item for a room but didn't have the paint swatches or room measurements to confirm it would work.  Hallelujah to these brilliant people for making our lives easier!

Durable Paint Chips - So much smarter than plain old paint chips because these guys won't get ripped in your purse or left in your pocket at home.

Here's another variation on the same idea.

Pocket Sized Floor Plan - I've brought home rugs and furniture on spec because I wasn't properly prepared and then had to lug them back when I find they don't fit.  This would have definitely helped me avoid that!

Receipt Folders - I will admit that I have wasted an hour or two searching my purses and pockets for the one receipt that seems to have walked away.  Keeping a handy pouch like this in your purse or in the car means you immediately file and organize as you go.

What's your best tip for being an organized shopper?

Don't forget to enter the draw for Buddha Bowls from Flavour Design. The giveaway closes on Thursday night at 6pm and winner will be announced Friday.

  1. Love those durable paint chips! Lately, since I have been mostly at flea markets, I bring along measurements and what I thinkt he going rate "should" be so I have it for reference!

  3. Smart ideas, Carol! I have a multi-pocket pencil case in my purse that holds paint chips and small samples of my fabrics, counters, flooring and siding. It also contains room and window measurements, a pen and note pad, and a small measuring tape.
I also keep coupons in my purse. That way, they're never left behind on shopping day!
    Have a fantastic day, Carol!

  4. Great ideas! And I also love those durable paint chips. If I'm shopping for something specific I try to snap photos of the space I'm looking for with my camera phone, otherwise I tend to completely misremember my home!

  6. I too am a disorganized shopper when it comes to my home. I have tried a multitude of different ideas but none have stuck with me thus far...some of these are great ideas I have not tried...but I will. Thanks for sharing and for stopping by my blog. Happy Wednesday!

  8. I love the paint chip idea! Just yesterday, I took a pic with my phone. HOWEVER, I'm I like to write lists, even though I could on my phone, it just seems that I can do a better job at getting done what needs to be done by actually writing it down.

  9. Love those receipt folders. This would be especially good for me as my husband and I are now keeping track of all of our receipts and logging them into an app that helps us track our finances.

  10. Mine is never leave home without a tape measure! And like Tracey, I'll often take a pic on my phone of the 'whatnot' before heading out. I have a little purse-size notebook with measurements of things I'm working on. But I do love those durable paint chips, and the floor plan idea. Had to laugh - when I first read your intro. I thought your grocery list WAS your decorating list - sleepy eyes! LOL.

  11. Good topic to bring up. I usually do up a client Binder even for myself and I take it out with me where ever I go shopping. That way I am prepared on colours, samples and measurements. I'm with you, I've lugged around mirrors or even called home to see what space I was working with!!!

    Great post Carol!

  13. These are great! I especially love the mini floorplan with the paint colours attached! I usually have my paint chip in my purse with a scrap of paper with measurements written on it for windows, empty areas in case I spot a great dresser, etc. However, since getting my iPhone, I keep a list on it instead and take photos of my rooms so it keeps everything together.

  14. I did a post wayyyy back about my home notebook. I started it when we were building our home. I keep everything from the dimensions of our rooms to paint chips, fabric swatches and a list of projects/specific items that I'm looking for. All of these things are kept in plastic sleeves so I can pull out what I need when I go shopping instead of taking the entire notebook. (I also keep a snack size ziploc bag with tiny fabric swatches-those swatches have prevented many bad purchases.)

  15. Carol,

Such great ideas ... I've been walking around lately with full sized paint stirrers in my purse because they had my actual paint on them for fabric matching, etc. I guess if I cut them to smaller sizes I wouldn't have to carry a suitcase! Here's my shopping tip (I actually plan to post about it soon, so this is letting the cat out of the bag) but Grocery IQ is a great app (IPhone, ITouch, IPad) that I actually use for any shopping excursion. I love the automated checklist to create my touch screen shopping list! Hope Willis is making himself at home :)

  18. I carry around a moleskine notebook with measurements and things taped inside. Just realizing now that it's actually getting a little thick and full. Oh no, now what shall I do! The pocket sized floor plans are cute!

  19. My best tool is my smart phone and I take pictures of everything. I absolutely love the idea of the mini floor plans.

  20. I have to be the world's worst when it comes to organizing receipts. I totally need to try this trick - I certainly carry a big enough bag to keep it with me. And the paint chips are genius!
