Craigslist - What NOT To Do

You know I'm a Craigslist junkie.  I literally cannot get enough but sometimes while I'm browsing I come across an ad that makes me laugh or roll my eyes or shake my head or all of the aforementioned.  These are some of my "don'ts" for selling your goodies.

A Little Math Goes a Long Way............................

Before you put your item on craigslist, take a teensy second to count how many items you for sale.  "Honey, how many d'em chairs are we sellin'?"  "Not sure, 5 or 6".

Sometimes It's Just Not Meant to be Sold...............

Oh my goodness, where to start?!  I found this listed in the "vintage" section.  It's not vintage people, it's OLD!  Why is it yellow?  I don't want to know.

Location, Location, Location....................

Please live in the same city/province/state as the audience to whom you are advertising.  I was ready to hop in my car and go get this end table only to discover the guy isn't even in the same province as me:((  Boo to you for getting my hopes up.

Is It an Oldie, A Goodie, or Neither?.....................

Sure, why not.  Let's call it an antique.

The Dollars and Cents of It All...............

Actually, I DO want to know what you paid.  People want to get a deal when they're shopping craigslist so you might as well just be honest about what you paid.

So promise not to do any of these goofy things when you're selling things, mkay?

  1. I agree with you on everything but what they paid. I don't care what they paid, because furniture has very little resale value. In fact, I find it hilarious when people try to justify their price, based on the purchase. I think...well, you were an idiot for paying that.

  2. I'm addicted to browsing Kijiji and I've seen all these don'ts haha. I can't believe how much people want for complete crap sometimes and lately I've found a couple great buys, only to realize that the seller is hours away from me. So annoying!

  4. HAHAHA. Loved this post. The one Michelle shared is hilarious too. "Large man with regular dog. Regular man with three large dogs..."

We get a lot of listings for "chester drawers" around here.

    1. I see ads in our local online classifieds for "chester drawers" too! I used to do proofreading for a job, so I can't help myself when I see gross misspellings! Once I wrote to the seller and told her how the word was supposed to be written. Her response? "If that's all you have to do with your time, go @#&$&@#&^!" But really, how hard is it to figure out how to spell the word correctly! (And hey, by now you'd think Chester would have been sold, right? Hee hee!)

  5. Oh gosh I'm on CL all the time and I'm amazed at some of the ads. I recently inquired about an antique table for sale and the seller's email handle was Damien Von Blood. Needless to say, I didn't respond. Hope you and your readers can stop by and enter my Novica giveaway and support artists around the world!

  7. OH that's good, I don't usually purchase items from craigslist, but do sell on there. I'll have to read it from time to time for a good giggle!

  8. Carol, this post was hilarious! I wonder what those people were thinking in their advertisements! "5 or 6 chairs" - too funny!
    Good tips.

  10. You have hit the nail on the head with this post! I scour our local CL at least once a week for great finds, and some of the ads that are placed kill me. The ones that don't even show an image drive me insane. I mean, common peeps! But what really amuses me is the value sellers place on their 'stuff'. Just last week I came across 2 vanities, almost identical, and I'd say early 30's... just different sellers. One was asking $450, and the other $50! Hmmmm... I can see some variation based on condition, etc., but a gap like that stands out in all the wrong ways for the high ticket item! And guess what... it's still there, the other one is listed as SOLD!

  13. OMG! This is so true! We have a local online classifieds here and you wouldn't believe some of the ads! My favorite one is some guy never says a thing about what he's selling except "The picture says it all." Reallly?!?!?! Ugh! LOL!

  16. I hate being chewed down in price when I have something listed, like a table or chair for 10 dollars. Come on I listed it low so that it would go, not so you can ask me to sell it for 5 dollars. I have stuff listed now. And a woman asked since she asked for 3 things could she get it cheaper? Seriously? I could be asking more and they would sell at that price! GGRRR.

  20. Howdy! Quick question that's completely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My blog looks weird when browsing from my apple iphone. I'm trying to
find a template or plugin that might be able to
fix this issue. If you have any suggestions, please share.
    Thank you!
